Adult Education Course

In our Adult Education Series, Tell Me More About…. we are digging deep into the Hebrew Scriptures this semester. We are studying a selection of texts from the Torah, the Prophets and the Wisdom literature. (Recall that the Tanakh, or the proper name of the canon of Hebrew Scriptures is an acronym for the three traditional subdivisions of the text: Torah (Teaching), Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings).) So following the traditional subdivisions of the text, we too will study select books from each, as the class decides what we’re interested in exploring. For those who are interested in really digging in: in terms of texts we will of course be working with the primary text of the Bible, and our main secondary text will be Michael Coogan’s, The Old Testament, A Historical and Literary Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures. While looking at the Torah, we’ll look into the most resent scholarship about sources of the text with Richard Elliott Friedman’s book, The Bible with Sources Revealed. Other books of interest for this section for the truly hard core, will be Kevin A. Wilson’s book, Conversations with Scriptures: The Law, Leviticus as Literature, by Mary Douglas, Introduction to Reading the Pentateuch, by Jean-Louis Ska, and Treasures Old and New; Esssays in the Theology of the Pentateuch, edited by Joseph Blenkinsopp. (I have these if anyone wants to check these out.)

We meet between the services, in Nina’s office (from 9:00 to 9:40 or so) every Sunday, unless otherwise announced. All are welcome! Come for one class on your favorite story from the Hebrew Scriptures, or one that you’ve always wondered about… or join us every week.
